Transient State, 2021

Transient State is a photobook that visualizes the effect of time on memory. Transient State investigates the theme of memory through the medium of instant film, and subject of vernacular photography; with found/archival photographs comprising the content of the book.

The concept behind Transient State is to allow viewers to contemplate the motif of memory through the act of discovery. The compilation of vernacular photographs presented in Transient State invites viewers to explore pre-existing narratives, as well as to form their own associations with the content. The gathering of photographs from a variety of disparate sources alludes to a “fractured” phase of memory; with the connection of images through the medium of the photobook, placing the “memories” (vernacular photographs) in a transient position between the states of being lost, and found.

The medium of instant film was chosen as the mode of communication, due to the medium’s indexical representation of the “singular memory”. The removal of select prints from their allotted pages introduces the caption information to viewers. Along with providing narrative context to the visuals, the captions represent the effect of time on memory through their presence, and absence.
